I installed Fedora Core 1 and there was no sound. No biggie, I though, and installed ALSA. It was all blood and tears but at the end of the day (or two) it was alla set. Alsaconf detected my soundcard and voíla!

However, every time I started KDE there was some freakin aRTs which messed things up even though it shoudln't have restarted. But that was nothing alsaconf couldn't fix. Until now.

Alsaconf won't detect my soundcard. Fedora's Soundcard detection (redhat-config-soundcard) detects the card (at least it gets the name right), but no sound.

I haven't installed a single distro without sound problems, yet. Neither have I ever been able to solve those problems by myself. Are there any decent how-to's available so that I wouldn't have to bother other people all the time?

Dear all,
Your problems lie with the soundcard and ALSA, I have Ac 97 and it didn't work untill I changed the driver from snd_intel8x0 to illn80 module or something like that. ALSA doesn't clearly support ac 97 use OSS module illn80 (or similar), should be already installed with your distro.

Hope this helps

Cheers, Appleman1234, but I can't find illn80 or any module with "n80" string in it. The closest I get is i810_audio and that's not working. That is the same driver Fedora tries to apply when detecting the soundcard.

I'm not even sure if I know how to change the driver. Do I just edit modules.conf?

And one more thing. Is there a way to apply the changes in modules.conf in any other way than restarting the computer? The changes have to be applied somehow, right?

Dear all,
The i810_audio is correct and you should be able to change it using sndconfig or by editing the modules.conf, and changing snd_intel8x0 (or similar) to i810_audio.

Hope this helps
