Pppoe: Speed Of Eth Bigger Than Speed Of Ppp

i'm using pppoe for my adsl-connection and the eth1 device is the one that is used to create the ppp0 device. now i wonder why i get an output like this if i measure the speed of them:

       Iface        RX(KB/sec)   TX(KB/sec)

        eth1           50.147       35.074
        ppp0           47.603       32.578

the eth device is always ~3kb/s faster than the ppp device. since the eth-device is the physical device the ppp0-packets are transfered over i wonder why they differ? first i thought the pppoe-overhead had something to do with it and the data passing the eth1 interface had to be wrapped but then the ppp0 speed should be higher, not vice versa. or is this just a problem measuring the speed (i'm using a simple time-based /proc/net/dev checking)?
