hi all,

I have a network in the office running 4 windows machines.
I have just purchased another that i would like to use as a server and i installed suse linux es 9 on it. The linux server is running with apache2 as i would like it to host an intranet type of site on it.

when configuring the server via yast i named the server: apple (hostname)
and entered a domain name of: mycompany.gr (since i have a hosting company host my www.mycompany.gr site)

The problem that i have is that from a windows machine on my lan using internet explorer if i type apple and press enter i will see the test site i have created. I would like it though to also work by typing apple.mycompany.gr and pressing enter.

This at the moment does not work.

I have tried looking through all sorts of different options in yast and tried configuring all sorts of .conf files but can't seem to work it out.

All i want is to be able to type apple.mycompany.gr from a pc on my lan and to recognise it.

Is there a way of doing this?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Make your DNS (or LMHOSTS file in windows) point apple.mycompany.gr to the IP of the linux server.
And then configure the httpd virtualhost to use that as ServerName.
More information on how to configure virtual hosts can be found in apache documentation - which is accessible on linux machine as /manual (i.e. as http://apple/manual - in your case)
