I am trying to boot to a customed SUSE 9 x86 SP1 kernel on a system with one SCSI drive and keep getting the following error during the boot, I have run mkinitrd to create the initrd image,
The INITRD_MODULES has two entries aic7xxx.ko and reiserfs.ko.
:
RAMDISK compressed image found at block 0
VFS Mounted root (ex2 file system)
Starting UDEV
Creating devices
Waiting for device /dev/sda3 to appear ---- not found ---- device node
Console fb0 fd0 loop0 loop1 loop2 ..
No root device found: exiting to /bin/sh

I read somewhere that I should disable CONIG_PARTITION_ADVANCED and I did that too. I also tried to remove the entry for initrd from /etc/grub/menu.lst and got the error

VFS Cannot open root device "sda3" or unknow_block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root from unknown block (0,0)

Any suggestion what to do  (debug) next? I still can boot to the installed system using CD.

Thanks.
